In 2018, Kim added Public Safety and the library’s Special Police Officers to her portfolio of departments. The unit began a rigorous reinvention process that culminated in new leadership, a community-based approach, and training in restorative justice practices for staff across the agency who serve the public.
Kim sponsored and led a host of projects during her time at DCPL that garnered local and national attention including the Memory Lab Network - a five-year federal grant to provide digital preservation training through libraries; Dig DC - the library’s first digital local history repository with 5,000 items and counting; and the DC Oral History Collaborative - where the city documents stories and memories of community organizations and residents in their own words.
Kim is a proud member of the Seeding Disruption education leaders fellowship (Cohort 2), which helps youth-facing professionals in DC solve problems with equity-driven design thinking. Kim parlayed this experience into an internal talent management initiative at DCPL and exploring a new lens for youth programs.
Prior to DCPL, Kim worked as a librarian at the New York Public Library and as a project manager at Kadix Systems, a management consulting firm serving government clients. She is currently an adjunct professor at Catholic Unversity teaching the Public Libraries course and was an adjunct instructor at DUOC community college in Santiago, Chile, where she honed her Spanish.
